What Is Discrete Trial Teaching and How Is It Used in ABA Practice?
Discrete Trial Teaching, commonly called DTT, is one of the most widely used and most extensively researched teaching methodologies in Applied Behavior Analysis. It is a structured, systematic approach to teaching new skills that breaks learning down into its smallest components and uses clear instruction, consistent prompting, and immediate reinforcement to build those components reliably over time.
Understanding what DTT is, how it works, when to use it, and what makes it effective is foundational clinical knowledge for any ABA practitioner.
What Makes a Teaching Trial Discrete
The word discrete in Discrete Trial Teaching refers to the fact that each teaching opportunity is clearly defined and separated from the next. Each trial has a clear beginning, a clear middle, and a clear end. There is no ambiguity about when a trial starts, what is being asked, or when it is over.
A single discrete trial consists of five elements that always appear in the same sequence.
The discriminative stimulus. This is the instruction or cue that signals to the learner what response is expected. It must be clear, consistent, and delivered the same way every time. Touch nose. What colour is this? Show me the ball. The discriminative stimulus is always the same phrasing for the same target to avoid confusing the learner with variations in how the instruction is delivered.
The prompt. Immediately after the discriminative stimulus, if the learner needs support to respond correctly, a prompt is delivered. This might be a physical prompt guiding the learner's hand, a gestural prompt pointing toward the correct answer, or a verbal prompt providing the first sound of the correct response. The level of prompt used is determined by the learner's current skill level and the prompting strategy outlined in the treatment plan.
The response. The learner responds to the discriminative stimulus, either with or without prompt support. The response is the observable, measurable action that the trial is designed to teach.
The consequence. Immediately following the response, a consequence is delivered. For a correct response this is reinforcement, delivered immediately and specifically. For an incorrect response this is a correction procedure, delivered calmly and without negative affect, before the trial is reset and presented again.
The inter-trial interval. A brief pause between the end of one trial and the beginning of the next. This interval is important because it gives the learner a moment to process the completed trial before the next one begins, and it gives the therapist a moment to record data on the response.
How DTT Differs From Naturalistic Teaching
DTT is a structured teaching approach that is deliberately distinct from the natural flow of everyday interaction. It is typically conducted at a table or in a designated learning space, with the therapist controlling the pace and sequence of teaching trials.
This is fundamentally different from Naturalistic Environment Teaching, which embeds teaching opportunities within the natural flow of daily activities and follows the learner's own motivation and initiations.
Both approaches have an important place in a comprehensive ABA programme. DTT is particularly effective for teaching new skills from the beginning, building foundational discrimination abilities, and establishing stimulus-response connections that need high repetition to consolidate. Naturalistic teaching is particularly effective for generalising skills across environments and people, and for building communication and social skills in context.
A quality ABA programme uses both approaches strategically, selecting the right methodology for the specific skill being taught and the specific learner being supported.
When DTT Is Most Effective
DTT is most effective in the following clinical situations.
When a learner is acquiring a completely new skill that they have not yet demonstrated at any level. The structured repetition of DTT provides the high number of learning opportunities needed to establish a new skill from the beginning.
When a learner needs to build discrimination between stimuli. Identifying colours, matching objects, distinguishing between yes and no, learning to identify their own name. These discrimination skills benefit enormously from the structured, high-repetition format of DTT.
When a learner needs intensive practice on a skill that is emerging but not yet consistent. A skill that appears sometimes but not reliably benefits from the concentrated practice that DTT provides, which builds fluency and consistency more efficiently than less structured approaches.
When a learner responds well to structure and predictability. For many children with autism, the predictability of the DTT format is itself regulating. Knowing exactly what is expected, exactly when, and exactly what will happen as a result provides the environmental certainty that supports engagement and learning.
Common Mistakes in DTT Implementation
Several implementation errors commonly undermine the effectiveness of DTT in practice.
Inconsistent discriminative stimuli confuse learners and slow acquisition. If the same skill is taught with slightly different phrasing each time, the learner is being asked to learn multiple variations rather than one clear response. Use the exact same wording every time for every target.
Slow or inconsistent reinforcement delivery reduces the effectiveness of reinforcement. The consequence must follow the response immediately. A delay of even a few seconds weakens the association between the response and the reinforcer.
Over-prompting prevents independent responding from developing. If a learner is always supported to respond correctly through high-level prompts without a systematic plan for reducing those prompts over time, the skill never becomes independent. Every DTT programme should include a clear prompting and fading strategy.
Running too many trials consecutively without variation or a break leads to satiation and disengagement. DTT should be interspersed with preferred activities and naturalistic interaction rather than run in long unbroken blocks.
