To earn a BCBA credential, a practitioner must complete a relevant postgraduate degree, accumulate a specified number of supervised clinical hours working directly with clients under an experienced BCBA, and pass a comprehensive board examination covering all areas of ABA theory, ethics, and clinical practice.
It is not a certificate that can be obtained through a short course or a weekend workshop. It represents a significant and sustained investment in clinical training and it is the qualification that should be driving the oversight of your child's ABA programme.
What Does a BCBA Actually Do?
A BCBA is the clinical architect of your child's ABA programme. Their responsibilities include:
Conducting the initial assessment. Before any therapy begins, the BCBA assesses your child's current skills, behavioural profile, sensory needs, and communication abilities to build a complete clinical picture.
Designing the treatment plan. Based on the assessment, the BCBA develops an individualised treatment plan with specific, measurable goals tailored entirely to your child's unique profile and your family's priorities.
Supervising therapy delivery. The day-to-day sessions are typically delivered by a Registered Behavior Technician (RBT) or equivalent a trained therapist who works directly with your child under the BCBA's clinical supervision.

The BCBA designs the programme, supervises the clinical team, reviews data, and makes all significant clinical decisions. They are the senior clinical authority on your child's case.
The RBT (Registered Behavior Technician) delivers the day-to-day sessions under the BCBA's supervision. RBTs complete a structured training programme and must work under ongoing BCBA oversight they do not operate independently.
